Wall Street : A History

Charles R. Geisst

The Wall Street Journal, Matthew Rees:
There's much to learn from the author's dispassionate account of Wall Street's growth. The biggest disappointment is his treatment of the past 15 years. His brief summaries of the individuals (Michael Milken), events (the 1987 stock-market crash) and trends (the wild popularity of mutual funds) don't really do justice to one of the most scintillating periods in U.S. economic history.

But that shortcoming does not mar what is an otherwise thorough retelling of a critical--though often overlooked--aspect of U.S. history. Wall Street will be enjoyed not just by the warriors who work there but also by the growing legions of Main Street investors whose retirements depend on the fortunes of the stock market.
